Johnson Allies Asking Trump to Step In
As we noted in a previous report, Speaker Johnson (R-LA) is now holding onto the gavel by a thread, and he is seeing very little support.
Trump was upset with the budget legislation, reportedly very upset that Johnson did not include a suspension of the debt ceiling so it would fall under the Democrats.
Now, Johnson's allies are reportedly reaching out to Trump to try to save his speakership so that we don’t see a repeat of what happened at the beginning of this term.
Chaos Rules the Day
If Johnson is ousted and the GOP is unable to name a successor right away, it could hurt Trump’s presidency.
Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL) explained, "If we have some kind of protracted fight where we can’t elect a speaker — the speaker’s not elected; we’re not sworn in. And if we’re not sworn in, we can’t certify the election.
"I would hope that President Trump would chime in and talk to those who are maybe a little hesitant, and say, ‘We’ve got to get going. We don’t have time.’"
Most House members complaining about Johnson are allied with Trump, but not all of them.
Reps. Massie (R-KY) and Roy (R-TX) are likely to try to block Johnson, and neither of them are on good terms with Trump right now.
Rep. Pat Fallon (R-TX) is hoping that Trump will invite Johnson to spend the holiday with him, stating, "Any time would be great, but right after Christmas if President Trump said, ‘You know, listen’ — it would even be really cool if somehow Mike Johnson ended up at Mar-a-Lago for Christmas… wherever the president is.
"I think it would be incredibly powerful."
The House will return to DC on January 3, at which point a Speaker will be chosen.
The election certification process is on January 6, so there is not a lot of time to get this figured out, and Johnson is on very thin ice right now.
If not Johnson, then the GOP needs to identify who will be the next Speaker quickly, and, of course, they are going to need Trump’s blessing.
Trump has not said anything publicly since the CR passed, but rumors are that behind the scenes, Trump is not happy because the debt ceiling will have to be removed by the GOP, and he wanted to hang that on Biden and the Democrats.
I am sure that Trump will address this soon, but he would be best served to do it very soon or, as noted above, this could actually hurt the certification of the election.
