JD Vance breaks Senate tie to confirm Pete Hegseth to lead Pentagon
The Senate just announced the news.
President Trump’s nominee to become Defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, has emerged victorious after Vice President J.D. Vance cast the tie-breaking vote for his confirmation.
Hegseth was confirmed by a vote of 51-50.
Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to laud Hegseth's accomplishment.
“Congratulations to Pete Hegseth. He will make a great Secretary of Defense!” wrote Trump in his recent post after learning of Hegseth’s confirmation.
It was always going to be a close race to get Hegseth confirmed, especially after multiple allegations of inappropriate behavior were made against Hegseth.
According to Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski, those allegations consisted of “sexual assault and excessive drinking.”
Hegseth faced one final hurdle when just a few days before his confirmation vote, reports emerged that his ex-sister-in-law alleged that Hegseth had abused his second wife.
According to Fox News, Pete's ex-sister-in-law Danielle said that Pete "had an alcohol abuse problem and at times made his ex-wife, Samantha, fear for her safety. Danielle Hegseth was previously married to Pete Hegseth's brother and has no relation to Samantha."
However, Senate Armed Services Chair Roger Wicker stood by Pete Hegseth's nomination, saying that any reports “regarding a confidential briefing on the FBI background investigation of Pete Hegseth that I received last week are starkly and factually inaccurate.”
Samantha Hegseth's allegations were further weakened when Samantha later denied to NBC News that there was any abuse of any kind in their marriage and that the affidavit was not accurate.
The confirmation of Hegseth has also been praised by the Concerned Veterans for America, a group in which he formerly held a leadership position.
“The confirmation of Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense presents a real opportunity to prioritize the security and prosperity of our citizens, champion prudence and effectiveness in our defense strategy, and focus our Department of Defense on America’s most vital interests,” a statement from the group read.
Despite the countless efforts to stop Hegseth from emerging as the next Defense secretary, he won the votes needed to take the position. Despite Republicans holding a 53-47 advantage in the Senate, three GOP members crossed the aisle to make it a 50-50 tie.
Vance then stepped in to cast the deciding vote and make it a 51-50 victory for Hegseth.
Democrats were bound and determined to prevent Trump's top pick for Defense Secretary from taking office, but Trump and Vance showed just how much they're going to be able to do with Congress on their side.
What else do you think the Trump administration will be able to accomplish in the upcoming years with their Republican majority?
