Jack Smith Seeks July Trial Date for Trump

The battle to get Trump into the courtroom before the general election gets started has begun.

Jack Smith has had his trial date pushed back while Trump fights for immunity.

Smith is now pushing for a July 8 start date, which would guarantee that Trump’s trial is over before the election, with a verdict handed out.

Get Him in the Courtroom

Now that the Supreme Court has agreed to take Trump’s immunity case, Smith is trying to get the cases lined up with court dates.

For the classified documents case, it was originally slated to start in May, but motions and such have pushed the case back.

This is one of two cases that I believe could wind up in a guilty verdict for Trump even upon appeal.

Smith has filed the charges in a way that most legal experts say it will be nearly impossible for Trump to outright win the case without at least one conviction.

If Trump is convicted of a felony, he loses significant support, more if he is sentenced to jail.

So, Trump wants this case to start as late as possible, but Smith just landed a direct hit against him with his request.

On Thursday, Smith filed to have the case start on July 8, and that date was not just plucked from the sky.

That would just happen to be the week before the Republican National Convention to pick the nominee, which starts on July 15 and runs through July 18.

If Trump is on trial, he would have to either miss the convention or fly back and forth from Florida to Wisconsin in order to attend.

Trump’s defense team countered with August 12, with Trump’s Defense team arguing, "As the leading candidate in the 2024 election, President Trump strongly asserts that a fair trial cannot be conducted this year in a manner consistent with the Constitution.”

The judge in the case is Judge Aileen Cannon, who was appointed by Trump and has been sympathetic to his filings in the past.

However, she has had many of her rulings overturned on appeal, so she is going to have to be careful in this ruling.

I am going to guess that she might split the difference and start the trial after the convention is over just to keep Trump from complaining about it.
