Iran Promises Biden Administration it Will Not Target President-elect Trump
In a significant diplomatic communication, Iran has assured the United States it will not pursue threatening action against President-elect Donald Trump, aiming to ease geopolitical tensions.
Amid serious allegations of an assassination plot emanating from the country, Iran has committed to a strategy of non-aggression against Trump in an effort to reduce tensions between D.C. and Tehran, as Fox News reports.
The Wall Street Journal reported this month that Iran sent a written assurance to the Biden administration in October, promising not to assassinate the former president.
This assurance follows a stark warning from the White House, stating that any attempt on Trump’s life would be seen as an act of war and a major national security threat.
Timeline of Allegations and Assurances
Last week, the Department of Justice brought to light allegations implicating Tehran in a scheme to eliminate Trump, linking these accusations to his activities during his presidential term.
These allegations surfaced following the arrest of a Pakistani individual in August, accused of participating in a murder-for-hire plot orchestrated by Iran.
This revelation has significantly heightened the stakes in the ongoing diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and Iran, as the latter has repeatedly vowed to avenge the assassination of Qassem Soleimani. Soleimani, a high-ranking military commander, was killed in Iraq by a U.S. drone strike under Trump's orders during his first administration.
Iran’s Vow for Legal Recourse
In response to these developments, Iran has expressed its intent to seek justice for Soleimani’s death through legal and internationally recognized avenues. The Iranian mission to the United Nations emphasized that they do not publicly discuss the specifics of their diplomatic engagements with the U.S.
The Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations stated, “We do not issue public statements on the details of official messages exchanged between the two countries.” They added, “The Islamic Republic of Iran has long declared its commitment to pursuing Martyr Soleimani’s assassination through legal and judicial avenues while adhering to the recognized principles of international law.”
U.S. and Iranian Statements on the Allegations
The Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, addressed the allegations directly, dismissing them as a “third-rate comedy.” This comment underlines the dismissive stance of Iran regarding the U.S. claims of an assassination plot.
The intricate situation has not elicited public comments from either the White House or Trump’s transition team, reflecting the delicate nature of the ongoing diplomatic interactions.
As tensions simmer, the international community watches closely, aware of the profound implications such assurances and allegations hold for U.S.-Iran relations and regional stability.
