Greenlandic PM 'ready to talk' to Trump amid acquisition speculation
The notion of acquiring Greenland was one of the more memorable concepts floated by Donald Trump during his first term in office, but amid his imminent return to the White House, the idea seems to have gained new ground.
As The Hill reports, Greenland's prime minister, Mute Egede, just declared himself “ready” to enter into discussions with Trump about potential opportunities for strategic connections between his country and the United States.
Egede ponders the possibilities
It was during a Friday press conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, that Egede was asked whether he had been in touch with Trump in recent days after renewed discussion about his interest in Greenland resurfaced.
While Egede stated that no such contact had yet been initiated, he added of his country, “we are ready to talk.”
The topic of discussion between Trump and the leader of the autonomous island that remains within the Kingdom of Denmark would almost certainly revolve around the U.S. president-elect's stated belief that American control of the area is “an absolute necessity.”
Mette Frederiksen, Denmark's prime minister, is apparently also interested in hearing Trump's ideas, stating that she had already requested a meeting.
Even so, Egede made the emphatic point that “Greenland is for the Greenlandic people. We do not want to be Danish, we do not want to be American. We want to be Greenlandic,” though that apparently does not mean that there are no mutually beneficial arrangements to be negotiated.
Trump Jr. pays a visit
Egede's statement comes on the heels of a visit to his country earlier this month from Donald Trump, Jr. and a delegation of Americans allied with the incoming administration.
As the Associated Press noted, the past -- and future -- first son told locals, “We're going to treat you well,” and he later remarked on the warm welcome he received from those living in the mineral-rich land that is also home to a U.S. military base.
The president-elect commented on the visit in real time, taking to Truth Social to express his continued excitement about the possibilities.
“Don Jr. and my Reps landing in Greenland. The reception has been great. They, and the Free World, need safety, security, strength, and PEACE! This is a deal that must happen,” he wrote.
Offering a play on his famous slogan, Trump added, “MAGA. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN,” but precisely what shape his ambitions may take, only time will tell.
