Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh passes away

Fans are grieving the loss of a true rock icon after learning news of a legend's recent death.

Phil Lesh, the bassist from the Grateful Dead, has died.

Lesh was 84 years old at the time of his passing.

The beloved musician's cause of death has not been confirmed, but we do know the musician survived several cancers in the past.

Lesh's death was confirmed on the social media platform Instagram.

Phil Lesh, bassist and founding member of The Grateful Dead, passed peacefully this morning. He was surrounded by his family and full of love. Phil brought immense joy to everyone around him and leaves behind a legacy of music and love,” a statement posted to his Instagram account read.

Lesh was a true music legend, co-writing huge hits like “Box of Rain” and many others for his iconic band, the Grateful Dead.

Dennis McNally, a Grateful Dead biographer, spoke very highly of Lesh in his book about the band, A Long Strange Trip: The Inside History of the Grateful Dead.

“On a day-to-day basis, the psychic pivot to the Dead is Phil Lesh, the most aggressive purist, the anti-philistine Artist. It is he who most often and most loudly demands that they dance as closely as possible to the edge of the nearest available precipice. Intellectual, kinetic, intense, he was once nicknamed Reddy Kilowatt in recognition of his high mental and physical velocity,” McNally wrote.

The surviving members of the band have since released a statement on the death of Lesh saying “Today we lost a brother… Phil Lesh was irreplaceable.”

“In one note from the Phil Zone, you could hear and feel the world being born. His bass flowed like a river would flow. It went where the muse took it. He was an explorer of inner and outer space who just happened to play bass. He was a circumnavigator of formerly unknown musical worlds. And more,” the statement continued.

We pray for everyone grieving the loss of the incredible musician, Phil Lesh.
