Well, that did not take long.
New Mexico Gov. Lujan Grisham has pulled back her firearm carry ban, with a caveat.
Her office made the announcement on Friday, issuing an updated order.
The New Order
Grisham has been taking significant heat over this ban, even among members of her party and gun-control advocates.
By literally revoking Second Amendment rights, even the activists stated that she had gone too far in eliminating a constitutionally guaranteed right.
With talk of impeachment getting louder, Grisham decided to rescind her order and update her public health order.
Grisham stated, “I’m going to continue pushing to make sure that all of us are using every resource available to put an end to this public health emergency with the urgency it deserves. I will not accept the status quo – enough is enough.”
The key point in the new order was the provision:
"Removing the previous provision around firearms and replacing it with a provision that temporarily suspends the carrying of firearms at parks and playgrounds in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County."
Senate Pro Tem Mimi Stewart added, “To address the gun violence crisis, we need to be looking at a multitude of issues: stopping illicit drug use, reducing illegal and all-too-easy accessibility of guns, violence prevention, and intervention programs.
"We must stay focused on our continued work on expanding treatment services and our behavioral health support network.
“The changes to the health order today will make a positive difference. I’m committed to working with the governor, my colleagues in the legislature, and this incredible team the governor has put together to make our state safe.”
Of note is the press conference that was called by Grisham did not have a single Republican in attendance. That was because they were not invited, which did not sit well with local Republicans.
Republican state Sen. Greg Baca stated, "It was noticeable who was attending the press conference. I know that myself and I really have no knowledge of any other Republican that was invited to the press conference."
Baca is more than willing to address the actual issues, but it seems pretty clear that with a Democrat majority, the governor does not wish to hear their input.
