Point Bridge Capital founder Hal Lambert is one of those Republican donors with deep pockets that every candidate hopes get behind him.
He not only backed Trump in 2016, but he also served on Trump's inaugural committee.
Now, however, he believes it is time to move on to a new candidate, and he is backing DeSantis, reports the New York Post.
Next Generation
Trump is having a really big problem getting megadonors behind him, and not just for the primary.
Many of them have stated that they will not pour money into his campaign if he wins the nomination.
If Trump does not have access to these deep wallets, it will be difficult for him to compete with ad buys during the general election.
On why he is backing away from Trump and moving over to DeSantis, Lambert stated, "There's a number of reasons.
"One, Donald Trump can only serve one term. He'll effectively be a lame duck almost on day one, if he were to win. But I don't think he can win the general [election]. That's the No. 2 reason. I don't think he can win the general.
"It's time to move on to the next generation. And Gov. DeSantis has a vision forward versus hashing out things from the past," reports Fox News.
Lambert continued, "I like Donald Trump's policies. I like what he did. I'm basing it on bringing the country back together.
"[Trump] is so divisive right now. If he were the nominee, this would be another situation where we're going to have the country, our own country, battling internally against each other in a way that's not healthy. ... I don't think it's healthy for the country to have to go through this in 2024 unnecessarily.
"We have a candidate in Ron DeSantis that can win, that has a record, that's conservative, that's the next generation. Why go through this unnecessary kind of hatred of each other in the country?"
You guys have heard me say the very same things about Trump regarding shredding DeSantis and tearing the party apart. Trump is alienating conservative voters with his strategy, and there is no way he can win unless Dems have a horrific turnout.
If DeSantis is the candidate, that could be the case, but I think liberals will crawl to the polling stations if they have to in order to vote for Biden over Trump.
