GOP Believes Jailing Trump Would Seal November Victory

Recently, Donald Trump was convicted on all 34 counts in the hush-money indictment.

Judge Merchan then decided to hold the sentencing hearing just days before the Republican National Convention, at which Trump will be dubbed the GOP presidential nominee in the 2024 election.

In a worst-case scenario, Merchan could sentence Trump to jail and rule that he needs to immediately report, a decision the GOP thinks would backfire.

Go Directly to Jail

Judge Merchan's sentencing hearing will be held on July 11, just four days before the RNC convention starts.

When the court date was set, I raised a red flag, questioning the timing of it.

Initially, I did not believe Merchan would order Trump to jail or even house arrest, but I just cannot shake the date of that trial.

While Trump will have filed for an appeal, it is up to Merchan to order Trump to prison or allow the appeals process to play out first.

Of course, Trump can appeal the sentence enforcement as well, but this just does not sit right with me.

The RNC, for good reason, believes that if Merchan goes that route, it will only benefit Republicans in November.

After all, Trump’s polling has improved with every legal battle, so we have to assume voters will rally behind him if Trump is tossed into a prison cell.

Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-WI) is on the same page, stating, “I think the Democrat Party better be very cautious because if the [past] sitting president of the United States can’t attend the convention in person, they are essentially electing Donald Trump as president.”

He added, “I think it’ll fire up the Republican base to the point where it’ll be unstoppable.

“And I think independent folks, like I just said, are going to say, ‘We don’t want this. This is not the United States of America that we want to live in. We want to be able to have free and open discourse between political parties without having to worry about being jailed.’”

Richard Porter, a national committeeman from Illinois, added, “If that judge compounds the unfairness of the trial with a jail sentence or that otherwise restricts his freedom to campaign, righteous anger at the injustice will wash away Biden and the corrupt establishment in November.”

This entire prosecution of Trump has backfired as badly as any political stunt I have ever seen.

Merchan would only be compounding that by ordering Trump to jail immediately upon sentencing.

If he does, I tend to agree with the men quoted above that Merchan could seal the fate of this election and possibly deliver that red wave we have all been waiting years to see.
