George Santos to Face Expulsion Vote, Refuses to Resign

Rep. George Santos (R-NY) has refused to step down as he faces a third attempt to expel him following the release of a recent Ethics Committee report.

The vote to expel Santos could come as early as this week following a resolution to do so introduced on Tuesday.

“We are now going down a third attempt for a privilege resolution to expel me from the House of Representatives,” Santos said.

“Here’s the case in point, in history, five members of Congress have been expelled. All five had suffered convictions in a court. All five had due process. This expulsion vote simply undermines and underscores the precedent that we’ve had in this chamber. It starts and puts us in a new direction, a dangerous one that sets a very dangerous precedent for the future,” he added.

“I provided them, every single document for the most part that they went off came from my counsel,” he said during a press conference.

He later said, “I am not unpacking the report. It is counterproductive for me to do so at this time. There will be a time that I will unpack it entirely and go line by line.”

Santos also faces 23 federal charges which include the misuse of campaign funds and lying about his personal House disclosures.

The concerns started with Santos with questions about his political resume as he was elected, leading to an investigation that could now bring an abrupt end to his House role.

Santos has already announced that he does not plan to run for reelection.

The congressman continues, however, to refuse to resign, choosing to stand for an expulsion vote regardless of the outcome.
