Gaetz Nomination as AG Stuns Even Republicans

Many names were tossed around as possible candidates for Attorney General if Donald Trump won, but Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) was never on the list.

However, one of the first positions nominated was AG, with Trump shockingly announcing Gaetz as his choice.

Gaetz has already resigned his seat, but this nomination is far from automatic.

There Will Be Resistance

Gaetz is a Trump loyalist, and this was clearly Trump’s way of flipping off the establishment, but I just don’t believe Gaetz will ever make it through the nomination process.

The GOP will have three votes to spare where JD Vance can cast the tiebreaker vote to install him, but I don’t think it will come to that.

There are already about a half-dozen Republicans who have questioned Gaetz being approved.

For instance, Senator Murkowski (R-AK) stated, “I don’t think it’s a serious nomination for the attorney general. That’s Lisa Murkowski’s view.

“We need to have a serious attorney general. And I’m looking forward to the opportunity to consider somebody that is serious. This one was not on my bingo card.”

Senators Susan Collins (R-MA) and Joni Earnst (R-IA) have also pushed back on the nomination.

On the Democrat side of the aisle, Senator Blumenthal (D-CT) stated, “He will have a lot of problems in the Senate. I think that this nomination will be the first major test of whether they’re willing to stand up to Donald Trump. And we’ll soon know.”

Senator Fetterman (D-PA) agreed, saying, "No one’s going to confirm him.”

What baffles me is why Gaetz already resigned his seat because he did not have to until he was confirmed for the new position.

The only thing that makes sense is that Gaetz was worried about the Ethics probe and figured he would resign before that report was made public (the committee can still publish the report).

Report or not, support or not, I cannot get behind this nomination because Gaetz is just not a serious enough person for me, especially in terms of being the AG.

I can think of at least a dozen other people that Trump would put in there who would do an amazing job, and Gaetz is nowhere on that radar.
