Gaetz Leads Effort for Legislation Exonerating Trump from Insurrection Charges
As you all know, Donald Trump is facing a huge federal case for election interference related to his actions on January 6.
Democrats in blue states have used that narrative to try to have Trump removed from the ballot, stating that he incited the “insurrection” on January 6, therefore, he is disqualified from running via Section III of the 14th Amendment.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) is now working to end that narrative via legislation he is presenting in the House.
Lost Cause
Gaetz is putting forth this resolution to show his loyalty to Trump, as are the members of the House who stood on the dais with him to support the resolution.
Gaetz was joined by Rep. Stefanik (R-N.Y.), Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), and Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), among others.
Another Trump loyalist in the Senate, Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH), has introduced a similar measure in the Senate.
The resolution would exonerate Trump from having incited an insurrection.
Gaetz explained, “We are here today to authoritatively express that President Trump did not commit an insurrection and we believe Congress has a unique role in making that declaration.
“It’s time for members of the House and Senate to show where they stand on this question.”
Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) added, “The bottom line is President Trump is not an insurrectionist, nor did he incite an insurrection.
“This narrative is simply a political distraction from the Biden Admin’s failures, spanning a crippling economy, record inflation, foreign policy blunders, to his disastrous handling of the border.”
From a political perspective, other than gaining more favor with Trump, this legislation is a complete and utter waste of time.
There are still a handful of Republicans in the House who do not like or support Trump, so this resolution would likely not even pass through the House.
It definitely will not get through the Senate, as there will also be Republicans that will side with Democrats.
The only purpose the resolution serves is to identify who falls in line with Trump and who does not, but that is likely the main purpose for Gaetz, as he and the MAGA contingent of members of Congress will then attack every Republican who does not get behind it and try to primary them to oust them for office.
From that perspective, I understand what they are doing… they want to rid Congress of Republicans who will put up resistance to Trump if he wins back the White House.
