Fulani herdsman attack Christians in Nigeria

The violent attacks by Fulani herders in Nigeria's Plateau State have aroused fear and concern, with recent fatal incidents leaving communities in mourning.

The Fulani attacks, occurring from Jan. 27 to Feb. 1, resulted in the deaths and abductions of Christians, spotlighting the persistent religious hostilities in Nigeria's Middle Belt, as Christian News Network reports.

The initial attacks began on Jan. 27, escalating over several days in Mangu County. The affected villages included Lightlubang, Chisu, and Jwakkom, where more than ten Christians lost their lives. As the violence spread, residents of these communities, predominantly Christian, faced lethal threats from the armed herdsmen.

Mangu County Confronts Tragedy

On Jan. 31, Lightlubang became a scene of tragedy when Fulani herders killed five Christians. The victims included a family and another couple. According to Caleb Joseph, “Fulani bandits killed three members of a family there, a couple and their child, on Jan. 31.” This incident has deeply affected the local population, many of whom are grappling with shock and grief.

Another attack earlier on Jan. 28 in Jwakkom village added to the toll of victims, as those targeted were caught unaware in their homes. The nature and frequency of these attacks have led to urgent calls for intervention from local authorities.

Residents of Mangu County have expressed their despair via social media and local testimonies, underscoring the critical plea for help. “Dear God, please come to our aid. We need you here in Mangu, Plateau State. My heart bleeds,” pleaded Nanbam Denan, echoing the sentiment of many villagers.

Shendai Village Attacks and Continued Threats

In another devastating incident on Feb. 1, Fulani herdsmen attacked Shendai village, located in the Namu District of Qua’an Pan County. This attack resulted in the death of one Christian resident, coupled with the abduction of four others. Matthew Tegha detailed that “the kidnapped four victims were taken away by their captors at gunpoint.”

The fear continues to grip rural communities as families are torn apart by these raids. The persistent insecurity has heightened the challenge of ensuring safety in these areas, where law enforcement struggles to respond swiftly. Meanwhile, broader concerns over religious violence targeting Christians in Nigeria amplify these local tragedies. The community's sense of vulnerability is compounded by the delayed arrival of necessary security forces.

Security Measures and Subsequent Response

The inability to maintain peace has led various groups to voice their indignation. Organizations like the Akurmi Development Association have publicly condemned the heinous acts. “AKURDA strongly condemns the barbaric act of killing, injuring, and abducting innocent people in the Majagada community,” said leaders Maigamo Yakubu and Pius Kyauta Agaji.

The statement from AKURDA further urged authorities and security agencies to take decisive measures. “We urge the security agencies and those in power to intervene promptly and ensure the safe release of the abducted individuals. We also call for increased security measures to prevent future attacks,” emphasized the association's representatives.

Incidents Take Place in Kaduna State

As attacks loom over Plateau State, neighboring communities have not been spared. On Feb. 5, a tragic assault occurred in Majagada village, Kaduna State, where the Rev. Bitrus Saleh Africa, along with three other Christians, was killed. Twelve individuals were kidnapped during this devastating event, sparking further dismay.

Majagada's events contributed to the mounting distress over Fulani herdsmen's activities, raising serious concerns about religiously fueled hostilities. Claims linking these acts to radical Islamist ideology persist, adding layers of complexity to addressing these issues. The widespread nature of such attacks highlights a pressing need for strategic responses that encompass multiple facets of social harmony and security within Nigeria.
