I don’t know about you guys, but it is crushing to see all these music legends dying as of late.
This one hit particularly hard because Steve Harwell, the former lead singer of Smash Mouth, is right in my age bracket.
Harwell was put into hospice on Sunday, and he died on Monday, reported the Daily Wire.
Sad Ending
When Smash Mouth popped onto the scene in 1994, the band had a habit of changing members quite frequently, but Harwell was one of two band members who founded the group and played through 2021 when Harwell retired.
As the lead singer, he was the glue that kept the sound together and kept fans packing the seats for their shows.
In 2016, things started to go sideways for Harwell, however.
He collapsed on stage, then had medical treatment for a heart condition in 2017.
We are now finding out that he had actually been diagnosed with a heart condition around 2013.
If you saw Smash Mouth during that time, you could see the regression of Harwell, which culminated in an ugly incident during a 2021 show.
Harwell was slurring his words, then went on a rampage against the fans.
After the show was over, he apologized to fans and retired from the band.
He stated, “Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of being a rock star performing in front of sold-out arenas and have been so fortunate to live out that dream.
“To my bandmates, it’s been an honor performing with you all these years, and I can’t think of anyone else I would have rather gone on this wild journey with.
“To our loyal and amazing fans, thank you. All of this was possible because of you. I’ve tried so hard to power through my physical and mental health issues and to play in front of you one last time, but I just wasn’t able to.”
The man had demons his entire life, and in the end, they got the best of him.
