Former BBC Personality Dies After Battle with Cancer
Fame is not always for everyone.
We all remember the story of former NFL player Patrick Tillman, who left the NFL to serve the country and lost his life.
Beccy Barr had a similar calling, leaving the BBC and her TV fame behind to become a firefighter.
She’s Gone
Barr spent several years on CNBC reporting financial news before she moved over to the BBC as a presenter and reporter.
After having spent two decades reporting the news, she decided to leave TV behind and became a firefighter.
She wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps, joining Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service in 2019.
When Barr left the BBC, she stated, “I still really love being a journalist but it has been nearly 20 years and I'm ready for a change and a different challenge.”
In 2023, Barr broke the bad news to her followers on social media, announcing that she had been diagnosed with incurable cancer.
Sadly, her fight is over, having succumbed to the disease earlier this week.
Her family announced on X, “I'm sharing the very sad news that Beccy passed away peacefully this morning.
“She spent her last few days at St John's Hospice who provided the most dignified & compassionate care to Beccy & her whole family.
“Donations to the hospice can be made in Beccy's memory.”
There are not very many professions to which I give a nod in terms of appreciating their service and sacrifice, but firefighters, police, and the military are at the top of that list.
You have to respect anyone who is willing to risk their life to save others, without question and without concern of their own.
Rest in peace, Beccy, and thank you for your service.
