First GOP black woman in Congress suffering from brain cancer

A history-making Republican, sadly, has a health condition that is apparently getting worse.

Mia Love, who checked off several boxes when she was elected to office in the 2014 election cycle, reportedly has brain cancer.

According to her daughter, the situation is getting worse, not better.

Sad Day

Ludmya “Mia” Love was elected to office during the 2014 cycle, taking office on January 3, 2015, then served two terms representing the people of UT-4.

When she was elected, she was the first black member of Congress from Utah, the first Haitian American ever elected to Congress, and the first black woman to serve in Congress as a Republican.

She had attempted to win her seat in 2012, but lost to her Democrat opponent. In the 2014 cycle, she defeated Doug Owens, beating him again in 2016 to hold the seat.

Sadly, in 2018, she lost her election to Ben Adams by just less than 700 votes.

Her time in office had its fair share of controversies, including a report questioning the citizenship claims made by Love about her parents. She had also worked with Democrats on legislation to help illegal immigrants who came to this country as children.

When Trump ran for office, she would not support Trump, which drew some mocking by Trump when she lost her re-election bid in 2018. Trump trolled her on social media, posting, "Mia Love gave me no love, and she lost.”

Love fired back at Trump, "This election experience...shines a spotlight on the problems Washington politicians have with minorities and black Americans — it's transactional. It's not personal.

“Because Republicans never take minority communities into their home and citizens into their homes and into their hearts, those voters stay with Democrats and bureaucrats in Washington because they do take them home, or at least make them feel like they have a home."

After she left her seat in January 2019, she was hired by CNN as a political commentator.

On Saturday, Love’s daughter, Abigail, broke the news that her mother was not responding to treatment.

Abigail posted to her social media account, "Many of you are aware that Mom has been fighting GBM brain cancer. Sadly her cancer is no longer responding to treatment and the cancer is progressing.

"We have shifted our focus from treatment to enjoying our remaining time with her. I am building an archive of special memories with Mia. Please send your pictures, videos, and memories to me at MiaLoveMemories@gmail.com.”

Jake Tapper had interviewed Love about her fight against brain cancer in 2022. He responded to the post, "Abigale and other members of the Love family: we are crushed by this news. We have known and loved your mom for years. Sending all our prayers.”
