Renowned filmmaker Oliver Stone expressed deep regrets over his vote for President Joe Biden during a candid conversation on Russell Brand's talk show Stay Free.
Stone, celebrated for documentaries like Ukraine on Fire, which delves into the ousting of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, offered a unique perspective on the current war in Eastern Europe.
In recounting the origins of the conflict, Stone cautioned against simplifying the situation as merely a Russian invasion of Ukraine. He argued that the war's roots trace back to the 2014 coup d'état, which he believes received substantial backing from the United States, aiming to infiltrate the Russian Federation.
He Regrets Voting For Biden
The filmmaker was vocal about his concerns regarding the presence of the "Neoconservative movement" within the American government, pointing to figures like Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who played key roles in the Iraq war and continue to wield influence.
Stone criticized Biden's stance as an "old Cold Warrior," holding a deep-seated animosity toward the former Soviet Union, which he mistakenly conflates with Russia today, despite its non-communist nature.
Alarmed by the current trajectory of the United States, Stone issued a stark warning of a potential World War III, expressing disappointment in Biden's leadership. He admitted to mistakenly hoping for a calmer approach from the president, only to be disillusioned.
Stone asserted that the U.S. must alter its "suicidal" path, particularly regarding Ukraine and NATO's involvement. He emphasized that this conflict carries a dangerous resemblance to the volatile circumstances preceding World War 1 in the Balkans.
The filmmaker also highlighted the ethnic complexities of the conflict, shedding light on the struggles faced by ethnic Russians residing in eastern Ukraine. He criticized the media for overlooking their desire for autonomy since 2014.
According to Stone, a negotiation for ethnic Russian autonomy in eastern Ukraine was on the verge of fruition in 2022, but the U.S. interfered, hindering the peace process. Consequently, the situation has worsened, and Stone fears it will continue to escalate.
In essence, Stone's message serves as a plea for the United States to reassess its approach, lest it be dragged into a potentially catastrophic confrontation with an unwavering power.
