Federal investigations at NYC City Hall prompt Lisa Zornberg's resignation

The city of New York has been in political turmoil as the Department of Justice uncoers increasing indications of possible illegal activity within the offices of city officials.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams' Chief Counsel Lisa Zornberg announced her resignation late Saturday night, as CNS News reported.

It follows the recent search of several of the mayor's most senior officials by federal agents.

These officials include NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban, who resigned last week, and Schools Chancellor David Banks.

The Exit

Not much attention has been paid to the sudden resignation of Zornberg, which took place on Saturday night just before 11 o'clock local time.

It had been little over a year since Zornberg had been appointed to the position of general counsel for the city when he was given the position in July of 2023.

The former federal prosecutor released a statement, reading, "I am deeply grateful to Mayor Adams for giving me the opportunity to serve the city, and I strongly support the work he has done and continues to do for New Yorkers."

While the resignation signifies a change from inside City Hall, she was not sent away without some thanks for her time there.

Adams also put out a statement, which read in part, "We appreciate all the work Lisa has done for our administration and, more importantly, the city over the past 13 months. These are hard jobs and we don't expect anyone to stay in them forever."

"We wish Lisa all the best in her future endeavors. The other senior members of the counsel's team will remain in their roles to ensure the office continues to fully operate without issue, and we expect to name an acting chief counsel in the coming days," his statement continued.

A senior advisor, the NYPD's commanding officer of Midtown Manhattan, the schools chancellor, two deputy mayors, the commissioner of police, and Zornberg himself were among those whose cellphones were confiscated by federal investigators just over a week ago. Zornberg has now decided to resign.

Following Thursday's announcement of his resignation, Tom Donlon, the police commissioner's replacement, assumed the role of interim commissioner on Friday night.
