Even CNN Can't Defend Tim Walz's Lies About 1995 DUI Arrest

CNN’s Michael Smerconish called out Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz saying that his “lie” about his 1995 DUI arrest is “indefensible.”

Walz has been in the spotlight since Vice President Kamala Harris selected him as her running mate following her ascension to the Democratic Party nomination. Since Walz's selection, the spotlight has revealed some serious issues that Walz has been trying to hide for years.

When Walz was selected as Harris's running mate, many Americans learned about the skeletons in his closet that, up until recently, had only been explored in the Minnesota political circle.

In 1995 Walz was arrested for driving under the influence and when he ran for Congress in 2006, his campaign “repeatedly made false statements."

Specifically, Walz and his campaign denied that he had been drinking the night he was arrested in 1995 for driving 96 mph in a 55-mph zone in Nebraska.

Walz's Support Fracturing

During a segment on Friday, Smerconish stated that "I thought the DUI issue was a really significant and serious issue. I know that Republicans have spent a lot of time talking about the alleged stolen valor. My own opinion, for what it’s worth, having studied the facts, is that there’s no there-there. Walz spoke sloppily, should not have represented a role that he had as having been a permanent role when it wasn’t. But the DUI story is indefensible."

Smerconish's flippant dismissal of the serious stolen valor accusations aside, his focus on Walz's DUI is bad news for the Harris campaign.

Walz's defenders are already claiming that he himself isn't responsible for the statements from his campaign but Smerconish debunked those claims.

He explained, "Kasie, you and I know a thing or two about congressional campaigns, They’re very small, they’re very tight. There’s usually like a campaign manager and a paid spokesperson, and that’s it, so the idea that this came from his spokesperson and it didn’t come from him? I don’t buy it.”

As for the DUI itself, Walz was most certainly inebriated as he had a blood test taken after his arrest which showed a BAC of 0.128 which far exceeded Nebraska's 0.1 BAC limit.

Considering these results were taken from a blood test, it's safe to say his BAC was even higher when he was initially stopped. Walz has blamed hearing loss from his time in the National Guard for the DUI which is more rank dishonesty.

Harris Campaign Nightmare

Smerconish went on question Walz's selection and Harris's vetting process that led to Walz being picked over Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro or Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly.

He ended the segment by saying, "Full on, and it makes me wonder whether in the vetting process -- maybe this is as a result of the expedited nature of her ascendancy as the candidate -- but it makes me wonder how much they really knew about it. I’m sure they knew of the DWI, but it makes me wonder whether they were aware of all the underlying facts."

All of these allegations were well known in Minnesota so there is little chance Harris didn't know about all of this. Considering that, if Walz was her best option, how bad could things have gotten had she picked Shapiro or Kelly?

Walz has done nothing but lie and obfuscate and refuse to take accountability for his past mistakes and this is all before he faces Senator JD Vance in a debate in front of the nation.
