Ethel Kennedy Dead at 96
The matriarch of the most famous family in American politics has passed away.
Ethel Kennedy died this week at the age of 96.
She is the widow of former AG and Democrat Senator Robert F. Kennedy.
She’s Gone
Ethel was our last link to a time when the Kennedys were considered royalty in this country.
Joe Kennedy, her grandson, announced her death on Thursday.
He posted, “It is with our hearts full of love that we announce the passing of our amazing grandmother, Ethel Kennedy.
“She died this morning from complications related to a stroke suffered last week.
“Along with a lifetime’s work in social justice and human rights, our mother leaves behind nine children, 34 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom love her dearly.”
While her husband was the more politically famous, Ethel had quite a legacy of her own.
Her human rights work is legendary, and her contributions to the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Centre will forever cement her legacy.
She also had the honor of receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom when it actually meant more than being a top donor to a presidential candidate.
Ethel died only days after it was reported that she had suffered a stroke, clearly debilitating at her age.
Kennedy’s posting continued, “She was a devout Catholic and a daily communicant, and we are comforted in knowing she is reunited with the love of her life, our father, Robert F. Kennedy; her children David and Michael; her daughter-in-law Mary; her grandchildren Maeve and Saoirse; and her great-grandchildren Gideon and Josie.”
