Does Chris Christie have a chance to win the 2024 nomination? Not even if hell freezes over.
That, however, does not mean that he will not be a problem for Trump.
In fact, I believe Christie entered this race for the sole reason of trying to clear the way for DeSantis.
The Hitter
After Christie and Trump had a falling out post-2016 election, Christie has more or less been an attack dog against Trump.
He is very effective at this, having ending Jeb Bush’s campaign in 2016 in the same role for Trump.
According to rumors at the time, Christie was promised a high-profile job in the administration and when he did not get it, all bets were off.
Now Christie is hitting Trump in several major areas, and he is not backing off.
The former Governor of New Jersey stated, “The people in the Republican Party, and quite broadly across America, are tired of having political candidates who are snake oil salesmen who just don’t tell them the truth, who tell them whatever they think they want to hear at the moment."
Christie also took a shot at Trump’s estimates of the size of the crowds at his rallies.
He stated, “Tens of thousands don’t show up anymore. That’s another one of the big lies. All you have to do is look at the pictures,” reports CNBC.
Well, I don’t know about all of Trump’s rallies, but the rally he just held in a small town in South Carolina was estimated between 50,000 and 55,000 by local police, reported the Charlotte Observer, so Christie may want to check his data.
While Christie does not want to end Social Security, he does have some ideas for reform, stating, “Do the extraordinarily wealthy need to collect Social Security? Do we really need to have Warren Buffett and Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk collecting Social Security?”
Since launching, Christie has not cracked the five percent margin in most national polls, but as I stated, I don’t think he is in this to win this, regardless of what he says.
He is here to weaken Trump… so expect him to try to do just that for as long as possible before he is forced to drop out. Even then, I would expect him to get behind Ron DeSantis at that point and continue to attack Trump on his behalf.
It is going to make for one hell of a first debate and a very fiery primary season.
