Donald Trump, Brian Kemp Drop Feud Over 2020 Election, Appear Together in GA
Former President Donald Trump and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) appeared to have buried the hatchet after a years-long feud over Trump's charges of election fraud in Georgia during the 2020 presidential election.
Trump has long claimed that he won the state of Georgia in 2020, and that Kemp and the GOP didn't do their due diligence in investigating reports of abnormal activities and possible fraud during the election, but the former president now seems to have dropped the charges he leveled against the governor.
Trump and Kemp have been sworn enemies since, but it now looks as though both sides are laying aside their differences in order to present a united front going into November's election.
Both Trump and Kemp appeared together to be briefed in the unincorporated community of Evans on Hurricane Helene damage and speak to the press.
Georgia, along with several other southern states, was hit hard by the hurricane and this situation provides the ideal opportunity for Kemp and Trump to put aside their differences and stand for the people.
Burying The Hatchet
Trump thanked Kemp for his actions in addressing the fallout from Hurricane Helene and praised him for doing a great job as governor.
When asked if he had concerns about people being able to vote, Trump stated, "I'm worried about the people, not the vote. I'm worried about the people, a lot of people missing. It's a bad one. This was a bad one, bad storm, maybe the worst."
So far, over 200 people have been killed by Helene and there are more people missing and unaccounted for and that won't be changing anytime soon.
Many communities have been isolated and cut off by floods, and it will take rescue workers and other EMS services weeks to get through the devastation. Currently, thousands of people only have access to supplies that can be flown into cut-off areas.
Thanks to shortfalls in funding, FEMA's response has been ineffectual in some areas but thankfully citizen-led volunteer groups are working to pick up the slack and helping in the recovery efforts.
Trump and Kemp have recognized the severity of this storm, and now is not the time for old feuds. Hundreds are dead with dozens missing and entire areas have been devastated and won't recover for years.
Federal Response Falters
While Kemp and Trump meet in Georgia to plan the response to Helene, the federal response remains been chaotic and ineffectual.
FEMA is reportedly short of money thanks to the Biden-Harris administration spending millions on housing illegal immigrants. Furthermore, Harris has offered a pathetic $750 to Hurricane victims while sending billions to Ukraine.
Bridges, roads, homes, schools, restaurants, and shops have all been destroyed and billions will be needed for those communities to recover but so far, the administration is dragging its feet.
Many Southerners are getting flashbacks to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina that left New Orleans flooded and much of Louisiana battered. With the election roughly a month away, it's hard to imagine the people of the south, especially Georgia and North Carolina, will appreciate how Kamala Harris is handling things.
Meanwhile, Trump is putting politics aside and working for the people who have been hit hard and will need help in the coming years.
