Dolly Parton discusses her successful 58-year marriage to Carl Dean
The saying "opposites attract" couldn't be more aptly described for Dolly Parton and her husband Carl Thomas Dean, as PEOPLE Magazine reported.
In a recent episode of dumb blonde, hosted by Bonnie Xo, the country music icon, who is 78 years old, shared candid details about her 58-year marriage to the 82-year-old Dean. Despite their divergent opinions on celebrity life, the couple managed to find a way to make their love last.
“He’s quiet and I’m loud, and we’re funny,” she said. “Oh, he’s hilarious. And I think one of the things that’s made it last so long through the years is that we love each other [and] we respect each other, but we have a lot of fun.”
The "Jolene" singer even went so far as to say that the couple's ability to laugh at themselves has kept them from having huge fights throughout the years.
How They Get Past Conflict
“Anytime [there’s] too much tension going on, either one of us can like, find a joke about it to really break the tension, where we don’t let it go so far,” she explained.
“We never fought back and forth. And I’m glad now that we never did, because once you start that, that becomes a lifetime thing. I’ve seen it with so many people, and I thought, ‘I ain’t ever starting that.’ I couldn’t bear to think that he’d say something I couldn’t take… because I’m a very sensitive person toward other people and myself.”
Parton met Dean in a Nashville laundromat on the day she relocated to the city, and they were married two years later in 1966.
Despite his wife's A-list popularity, he has mostly avoided the limelight over their sixty years of marriage, opting to keep to himself. The childless couple rarely appears in public together, but Dean is still a huge fan of Dolly Parton's music.
