Kamala Harris must really be a peach to work for.
Yet again, another communications official is stepping away.
Jamal Simmons, who joined Harris' staff in November 2021, is leaving.
Simmons was hired as Harris' communications director after the sudden departure of Ashley Etienne.
If you recall, this was when Harris was losing staffers left and right. Her situation had seemingly leveled off, but now it would appear we may be having the beginning of a new wave of departures.
Simmons has significant experience, having previously worked on Al Gore's presidential campaign as well as working for CBS News and The Hill.
In announcing that he was leaving the Harris team, Simmons stated, "Working for Vice President Harris has been an honor and a privilege. I’m so thankful for the confidence she put in me and I will miss this fantastic team more than anything."
The departure follows yet another wave of PR failures by Harris, who was recently seen overseas greeting fishermen coming off the boats and stumbling for words with a group of children’s dancers.
The excuse that is being given for Simmons’ departure is that his wife has taken a position in New York, so the entire family will be moving there.
Harris’ chief of staff, Lorraine Voles, stated, "I knew Jamal has young children and was concerned about time away from them, but I also knew he could help me steady the ship. Because of his deep respect for the Vice President, he agreed to come on board for a year."
DC and New York are just a quick train ride away, however, so I am not buying that as an excuse.
Harris is notoriously difficult to work for, so I would imagine this just gave Simmons the excuse he needed to bail on a sinking ship.
It has not yet been announced who will take over this role after Simmons’ departure.
