Popular Surfer Dies in Freak Accident

American surfer Mikala Jones died doing what he loved doing most… surfing.

Having said that, the nature of his death was truly horrific and caught everyone by surprise.

Jones was surfing when he suffered a fatal injury on Sunday morning, reports CNN.

Freak Accident

Jones, a Hawaii native, was in Indonesia at the time of the accident, surfing in the Mentawai Islands near the Awera Resort.

The accident occurred around 9:15 a.m. on Sunday. Reports stated that Jones was cut by the fin of a surfboard, leaving a wound about four inches in his left groin. The belief is that the fin cut his femoral artery, leaving him with almost no chance of survival in that particular situation.

Isabella Jones, his daughter, stated, "I'm in so much disbelief right now, this doesn't feel real. I love you so much dad and I wish I could give you one last hug. I wish I could tell you again how much I love you and thank you for being the best dad. I wish you were still here with us, you weren't supposed to leave yet.

"This is too soon. I know you are in a good place now with nana vi, and your friends. I wish this never happened and we could just wake up and go surf together tomorrow morning."

Renowned surfing photographer Brian Bielmann added, "Our friend Mikala Jones passed away yesterday in The Mentawais while surfing the waves he loved.

"He was a wonderful person, an incredible artist, his Go pro photos were mind-blowing. …. We're gonna miss him so much," reported Fox News.

For those of you that follow Jones on his Instagram, you know he was all about catching that "moment" for fans and nothing more.

His career got off to a fast start, winning two championships as an amateur, but when he noticed himself all over publications surfing, he decided to get a GoPro and post his own images, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Most people find it hard enough to just stay on the board, but Jones would rip through a barrel with one hand on a selfie stick to share the ride with his fans…

That right there is why the entire surfing world is in mourning today.

Rest in peace, Makala… you are one of the few that got to leave this earth doing what you love.
