Denial for Menendez's Sentencing Postponement: Proceedings To Resume As Planned
Embattled ex-Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) faces another blow as his plea for sentencing suspension has been denied by a court.
According to TheHill.com, A Federal judge has decreed that there will be no delay in the corruption charges sentencing for former Senator Bob Menendez, despite his wife's health troubles and upcoming trial.
Menendez had sought to postpone his sentencing date until following his wife's trial. His spouse, Nadine Menendez, is also confronting matching corruption allegations.
A refusal by U.S. District Judge Sidney Stein to the plea means that Menendez's sentencing will remain scheduled for Jan. 29.
The ex-Senator's request was driven by a wish to safeguard his wife's trial from being prejudiced by the results of his own.
Judge Approves Nadine Menendez's Trial Postponement
Fulfilling one request from the couple, Judge Stein agreed to delay Nadine Menendez's trial.
Originally set for Jan. 21, Nadine's trial will now start on Feb. 5 as she underwent surgery following a breast cancer diagnosis.
The concern of the couple's trials overlapping resulted in the request for delay.
Bribery and Corruption Charges Deface Menendez's Career
In a verdict delivered back in July, Bob Menendez was found guilty on 16 charges of corruption; a considerable smear on his political trajectory.
Among the charges are allegations that he received luxurious kickbacks from three New Jersey businessmen, tarnishing his repute further with demands for political intervention in exchange.
Adding to his woes, Menendez is also accused of acting as a foreign agent for Egypt.
Businessmen Stand Convicted in Unison with Menendez
Further, it was revealed that two out of the three businessmen associated with the scandal were convicted, while the third pleaded guilty before standing trial.
Barry Coburn, the legal representation for Nadine Menendez, expressed strong views on the scheduling of the trials, highlighting the potential intense media glare that would come with the sentencing.
He warned that such publicity could become freshly ingrained in the minds of potential jurors for Nadine's trial.
Health Concerns Prompt Delay of Nadine's Trial
Nadine's health diagnosis and resultant surgery have added a new dimension to the unfolding drama.
Due to these health concerns, her trial will occur after the sentencing of her husband, divergent to her lawyer's request for the trial to either precede or succeed it.
"Mr. Menendez' trial was several months back, and while many members of our venire would likely be cognizant of it, it would be a relatively remote memory," Coburn stated, adding, "Sentencing a former United States Senator would likely generate such a burst of intense publicity that it would be known to virtually every prospective juror in our case, and would be a fresh memory."
Anticipated Publicity Surge with Menendez's Sentencing
The sentencing of the formerly high-ranking Sen. Bob Menendez is inevitably expected to draw immense public attention.
As the Menendez saga progresses, it'll be interesting to see how the former Senator's actions could potentially impact his wife's trial and juror perception.
Nonetheless, the imminent trial of the couple will undoubtedly make news headlines, adding another layer of complexity to America's political canvas.
