Democrats, led by Schumer, look to delay confirmation of Trump nominees
Senate Democrats, led by their leader - U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) - are trying their best to delay the confirmation of many of President Donald Trump's nominees.
Schumer, according to Fox News, is not trying to hide this fact either.
He has publicly admitted to it.
Nonetheless, as we will see, some Trump picks are still getting through the upper chamber, thanks to the efforts of Senate Republicans and their leader - U.S. Rep. John Thune (R-SD).
Schumer tries to block Trump nominees
Schumer, on Thursday, admitted that the Democrats, in fact, are trying to do what they can to block at least some of Trump's nominees.
"Look, there are some nominees like [Secretary of State Marco] Rubio that got broad support, but a detailed discussion – I have some doubts about Mr. Ratcliffe, particularly when I asked him how he'd react if Tulsi Gabbard were put in charge of him in the DNI," Schumer said.
He added, "For a day or two, or a few hours to examine these nominees who have such power thoroughly, absolutely. Our idea is to let the whole truth come out if they try to rush them through. We don't want that to happen."
Fox details some of the "delay tactics" that the Democrats are using, such as U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy's (D-CT) recent last-minute objection, which delayed the vote on John Ratcliffe's nomination for the top CIA spot.
Ratcliffe, however, still managed to get by, as the Senate, on Thursday afternoon, voted 74 to 25 to confirm Ratcliffe's nomination.
"This can be easy or this can be hard"
Thune, as the majority leader of the Senate, has made it clear that he is going to do everything he can to push Trump's nominees through the Senate - overcoming the Democrats' delay tactics.
In one recent statement, he said:
As I’ve repeatedly said, Senate Republicans are ready to work as long as needed to confirm President Trump’s nominees. Nights. Weekends. Recesses.
Thune has also said that the Senate can do this the "easy" way or the "hard" way, but that either way it is getting done.
He said:
Do we want a vote on these folks on Tuesday or vote on them on Friday, Saturday and Sunday? Because that's what we're going to do. This can be easy or this can be hard. This is about America's national security interests, and we're stalling, so that's not going to happen.
Time will tell how this all plays out - including whether Trump gets all of his picks.
