Democrat Rep. Says He Would Help Johnson Avoid Removal

Over the last few weeks, Speaker Johnson (R-LA) has been forced to walk on eggshells amid his caucus.

Ever since Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) made her motion to vacate, momentum has been building to remove Johnson.

Johnson, however, may have just gotten new life after Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) stated that he would help protect Johnson.

Giving Us What We Want

In all honestly, it would be foolish for Democrats to throw the house into more turmoil by having Johnson removed as Speaker.

To this point, he has given Joe Biden and Democrats just about everything they wanted.

Johnson has now found himself with more Democrat support than Republican on several key pieces of legislation.

Democrats helped him pass Joe Biden’s $1.2 trillion spending package, and they have also backed Johnson’s passing of an aid package for Israel and Ukraine.

Freedom Caucus members in the House have been going ballistic, with Greene more than likely believing every Democrat would vote with her, just about ensuring the removal of Johnson after two other Republicans promised to back her.

Those additional two members would have put Greene right on the number she would need, but that is only if every Democrat votes for the motion to vacate, which is now not the case.

Rep. Khanna not only stated that he would help protect Johnson but also applauded him for crossing the line and using Democrats to support the aid legislation.

When asked if Johnson deserves the credit for this package, Khanna responded, “He does. Look, we came into Congress together and he always cared about civility. He actually led the civility pledge.

“And he – we had one issue, which was give individual votes. Don’t lump things together. And I give him credit for doing this.

“I would actually vote to table any motion to vacate him. You know, Congressman McCaul quoted Churchill.

“One of the things Churchill said is that America always exhausted every wrong option until doing the right thing. And this shows that American democracy still is very strong.”

So, for now, Johnson is safe. The challenge for the GOP will now be to win back the faith of voters in a GOP-run House so Democrats do not take it back over after the 2024 election.

If Trump does beat Biden, he will need both chambers of Congress to be effective, so that is what the GOP should be concentrating on right now instead of all this infighting.
