Democrat Daniel McCaffrey Wins Battle for PA Supreme Court Seat

Democrat Daniel McCaffery is projected to win Pennsylvania's open seat on the state's Supreme Court.

The win will give Democrats a 5-2 majority over Republicans in the state.

"McCaffery, a Superior Court judge, won the election for the state Supreme Court seat against Republican Carolyn Carluccio, the president judge on the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas. The two were vying for an open seat that was vacated after Chief Justice Max Baer, a Democrat, died last year," the Hill reported.

"Baer’s presence on the court gave Democrats a 5-2 majority, but the vacancy brought partisan control to 4-2 Democratic control," it added.

"Despite floundering approval ratings for President Joe Biden, Democrats prevailed in the biggest race in the state, electing Democrat Dan McCaffrey to the state Supreme Court over Republican Carolyn Carluccio in a race that Democrats made all about abortion rights and protecting election integrity," according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

"Republicans also poured millions into the contest but largely aimed to avoid both topics," it noted.

Philadelphia Democrats also celebrated the election of Cherelle Parker as mayor. She was noted as the city' 100th mayor and the first woman in the position.

The win for Democrats in Pennsylvania could be a concern for conservatives in 2024. The state is a key battleground location essential for Republicans to win to defeat Biden next year.

In 2020, the state was won by Biden in a contest that Trump and some conservative leaders in the state strongly disputed.

The upcoming year will prove contentious as well, with both parties seeking any advantage to gain control and help their party win its electoral votes in 2024.
