Cruz Goes Nuclear on McConnell for Ignoring His Senate Race
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) is not happy.
He has been in a very tight race with Rep. Colin Allred (D-TX), but he has been getting very little help from the party or from leadership.
Cruz should still come out on top, but this is clearly a problem, one that he is calling out.
What About Me?
Allred has had other Democrats dumping money into his campaign as well as big money donors from all over the country.
If I am being honest, Ted Cruz is not exactly popular, so the money has not been flowing, but conservatives will still vote for him.
I have brought this point up before that at some point, the GOP is going to have to consider primarying Cruz or risk going through this in every election.
Cruz is a brilliant legal mind and constitutionalist, but he always seems to rub people the wrong way, so his races can get uncomfortable.
To that point, just a few weeks ago, Allred was within a point of Cruz, with virtually every ad on TV supporting Allred.
Cruz seemed to hold out until the last three weeks, when he suddenly started posting more ads, and it has helped.
The last two polls before the election showed Cruz up by three and seven points respectively, so he should take this election rather easily, but that is not the point.
There is no way this race should have been this close if Cruz had received help from McConnell’s PAC and the RNC.
There is no way Cruz will criticize the RNC with Trump’s people now in charge, but he had no problem going after McConnell.
Cruz stated, "He’s basically behaved as a one-man dictator. I don’t think we want a leader who does that.
"I think when we win in November, and I believe we’re going to see a really good election, I think Trump’s going to win. I think we’re going to win a Republican Senate and Republican House.
“When that happens, we’ve got enormous work to do when that happens."
I think Cruz is right about the Senate, but I think it will be very difficult for Republicans to hold the House due to all the dysfunction that took place earlier in the term.
Regardless, I fully support the idea that we need leadership that understands its rule is to support the candidates chosen by voters, not the candidates that fit nicely into their agenda.
McConnell has already stated that he will step down, but Republicans need to ensure that they don’t elect a McConnell clone as his replacement.
