Cornel West Says Democratic Party Is 'Beyond Redemption'

Third-party presidential candidate Cornel West said that the Democratic Party is "beyond redemption" and unable to meet the needs of working people.

West's searing comments came during an interview with Hill TV's "Rising" after Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) endorsed President Joe Biden for a second term.

“They are dominated by the corporate wing, they’re dominated by the militarists when it comes to foreign policy, and that [Sanders] and AOC and the others are going to be, in a certain sense, window dressing at worst, and at best, people to appeal to every four years,” West said.

“But the Democratic Party is beyond redemption at this point, when it comes to seriously speaking to the needs of poor and working people," he added.

Sanders had previously noted the emphasis he has on helping Biden return to office for another term instead of allowing former President Donald Trump to return to the White House.

“It is no secret that I want Joe Biden to be re-elected president,” the Vermont Senator said. “He and I share the goal of beating back right-wing extremism.”

He explained to CNN’s Dana Bash the following day, “I think, in these really very difficult times where there is a real question whether democracy is going to remain in the United States."

Sanders previously ran as a Democrat in 2020 against Biden before later ending his campaign and endorsing him. West is running as a third-party candidate in an effort to oppose both major parties.

West's campaign is unlikely to secure a win but his views do show that many Americans are unhappy with Democrats and would prefer another alternative.
