Chair of Freedom Caucus to Step Down
The Freedom Caucus is more or less the MAGA wing of the Republican Party in the House.
That caucus has been in the headlines quite a bit lately, and it is back again for the resignation of its chair.
Rep. Bob Good (R-VA) has resigned his position, and is expected to make it official by the end of this week.
New Leader
Good recently lost his primary race, so the resignation was expected, but possibly not this early.
Now, the caucus has to decide whether to fill the position with a temporary chair or wait until after the November election and appoint a new chair after membership is re-established.
Good gave no indication either way as to how the party will go.
Good’s re-election bid was the subject of some divisiveness in the group, as members of the caucus were split on Good during his re-election bid after a feud with Trump.
Good endorsed DeSantis during the primary race, which led to Donald Trump backing a primary challenger against Good.
This happened even though Good had endorsed Trump after DeSantis pulled out of the election.
At the time, Trump stated, “He turned his back on our incredible Movement, and was constantly attacking and fighting me until recently, when he gave me a warm and ‘loving’ Endorsement — But really, it was too late! The damage had been done.”
In terms of a successor, the top two candidates are Reps. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) and Scott Perry (R-PA).
I might also throw Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) in there. I am not sure if he is even interested, but he is one of the more vocal members of the caucus.
If Roy runs, I think he would be the winner, but if I had to pick between Perry and Biggs, Biggs would probably get the vote.
