Canadian wildfire smoke again invades the United States

Canadian wildfire smoke is once again invading the United States, impacting air quality for over 110 million Americans.

Across the northern United States, Air Quality Alerts are in place, warning those with health vulnerabilities.

From Montana to Indiana, unhealthy air quality issues are being reported ranging from moderate to unhealthy across the Northern Plains through the Ohio Valley.

Bad For America

The majority of the wildfire smoke moved into the Ohio Valley recently, impacting major cities.

Early this week, residents in the Midwest will get a bit of relief as upper-level winds blow the smoke east, but some of the smoke will continue to move to the Northeast region of United States.

"There are no indications that plumes of smoke will let up anytime soon," Fox Weather reported. "The source of the smoke, Canadian wildfires, continue to burn out of control. This will be especially prevalent when storm systems move through, as northerly winds will help to transport the smoke south."

"The number of forest fires continues to rise in Canada, climbing this week to more than 670 blazes – more than half of which are still out of control," the outlet further reported.

Canadian fire officials said 23.9 million acres have burned so far this year.

23.9 million acres is about the size of Indiana.

"The staggering number of acres burned is 11 times the average for the last decade," Fox reported.

"Smoke from wildfires in June engulfed major cities along the Interstate 95 corridor, which made for hazy skies and reduced visibilities," Fox added. "Air quality readings reached hazardous levels in Philadelphia, New York and other communities downwind of fires burning in Quebec."
