Canadian PM's wife dated surgeon months before separation, bombshell court documents show

According to Canada's National Post, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau (who astonishingly announced in August that she was divorcing the nation's leader after 18 years of marriage) began a relationship with Dr. Marcos Bettolli (48), several months before she and Justin Trudeau formally separated.

According to the New York Post, Ana Remonda, the doctor's ex-wife, alleged in divorce papers filed on April 26 that Bettolli had “re-partnered with a high-profile individual who attracts significant media attention and presents significant security considerations.”

The publication identified this “high profile individual” as Grégoire Trudeau, despite her remaining unidentified in the documents.

According to the court documents, stay-at-home mother Remonda stated that she has "no position" regarding the new affair of her ex-husband.

According to the National Post, she insisted that the new relationship created unspecified security risks "to which the children are exposed while in their father's care" and requested a court order to safeguard the privacy and safety of their two children.

Bettolli reportedly responded by asserting that his ex-wife's stance on his new relationship is "not in the best interest of the children" and that Remonda had threatened to return to their native Argentina should the news of his relationship become public.

The court documents detailing the allegations over which the couple divorced in January 2020 remain undisclosed.

In August, the office of the prime minister formally declared that he and his spouse had executed a legally binding separation agreement.

“They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward,” a spokesman for the prime minister said in a statement at the time.

“They remain a close family and Sophie and the prime minister are focused on raising their kids in a safe, loving and collaborative environment," the announcement continued.

First Lady's Location

Grégoire Trudeau vacated the prime minister's estate and currently resides in an alternative dwelling in Ottawa, while her children continue to call the official residence home, subsequent to their parents' separation.

Although the precise whereabouts of her forthcoming residence remain undisclosed, the former first lady has published Instagram videos addressing gender equality and mental health that seem to have been filmed in close proximity to Rideau Hall, the official abode of the prime minister.

In recent weeks, unmarked vehicles carrying what appear to be plainclothes Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers have also been spotted inside a building the National Post identifies as containing Bettolli's address.

Bettolli teaches at the University of Ottawa medical school and specializes in minimally invasive procedures and chest wall deformities in children while also working at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

The doctor attended medical school in his native Argentina at the Catholic University of Cordoba, according to his University of Ottawa biography.
