Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham suspended open and concealed carry laws recently in New Mexico.
According to Grisham, gun violence is a public health emergency, reported Fox News.
That action created quite a stir on both sides of the aisle, and now New Mexico Republicans are threatening to impeach her.
Too Far
According to Republicans, that order proves her unfit for office.
State Reps. Stefani Lord and John Block are leading the charge to have her removed from office, using the buzzword of the decade… impeachment.
I think I have actually heard "impeachment" in recent months than I have heard "defund," and that is saying something.
Lord stated, "I was completely shocked that rather than addressing the crime issue at its core, the governor decided to go ahead and go rogue and restrict law-abiding citizens from owning their guns.
"And for those of you that don't know, we have an extremely tyrannical governor who has destroyed our beautiful state with her failed policies."
She added, "Our crime is out of control. We have fentanyl death as an epidemic. Homeless are living on the street. We have a revolving door for crime. They're out in our communities. We're ranked the worst in education, health care, and crime.
"We're the worst or worst on all the lists, and just when we thought she could not get any worse, she went completely rogue, said, 'Hold my beer,' and I'm going to illegally ban guns for 30 days.
"And I don't know if she's either willfully defiant or does not have the mental capacity to understand the Constitution and her oath, but either way, she's unfit for office."
There were even Democrats who questioned her order.
Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA), for instance, wrote, "I support gun safety laws. However, this order from the Governor of New Mexico violates the U.S. Constitution. No state in the union can suspend the federal Constitution. There is no such thing as a state public health emergency exception to the U.S. Constitution."
Her order simply makes no sense. She has just ensured that the individuals who had been licensed to protect themselves are now either powerless if held up or will go to jail if they are seen with their licensed weapon on their person.
No single governor can overrule the Constitution of the United States, but that is exactly what Grisham just did.
Even David Hogg, a well-known gun control activist, ripped her for the decision, stating, "I support gun safety but there is no such thing as a state public health emergency exception to the U.S. Constitution."
So, now the question is if Democrats, who by and large do not support his decision, will join Republicans to impeach one of their own.
It is a big ask, but how can you possibly justify allowing someone to stay in office who would rather punish law-abiding citizens than address the root problem… crime?
