Boxer dies at age 35, just 6 days after claiming world championshi

On Dec. 21, boxer Paul Bamba was on top of the world. He had just won the WBA Gold cruiserweight title by defeating Rogelio Medina, and broke Mike Tyson's longstanding record of most boxing wins in a calendar year via knockout, with 14.

Less than one week later, it was announced that Paul Bamba had died at the young age of 35.

At the time of writing, no cause of death has been reported yet.

Bamba, a native of Puerto Rico, was signed to pop star NE-YO's management company. NE-YO and Bamba's family announced the sad news:

It is with profound sorrow that we announced the passing of beloved son, brother, friend and boxing champion Paul Bamba, whose light and love touched countless lives. He was a fierce yet confident competitor with an unrelenting ambition to achieve greatness. But more than anything he was a tremendous individual that inspired many with his exceptional drive and determination. We are heartbroken by his passing and kindly ask for privacy and understanding during this difficult time as we collectively navigate our grief.

Before his death, Bamba had been linked to stars in the industry such as Tyson Fury and Jake Paul.

Bamba was scheduled to fight Tommy Fury back in 2022, but the bout was called off because of a weight disagreement.

The fighter didn't let that disappointment derail his career though, and in 2024 he would end up having one of the most successful calendar years ever for a boxer.

According to boxing studio Boxwerk, "Bamba had a remarkable year, culminating in his record-breaking performance where he surpassed Mike Tyson’s long-standing record with an astonishing 14 knockouts in 2024. His prowess in the ring and his relentless drive earned him the respect and admiration of the boxing community worldwide."

Jake Paul, the YouTube star turned boxing sensation, had been called out by Bamba for a future fight immediately after Bamba claimed the WBA Gold cruiserweight title.

The match will never happen though, as Bamba passed away just a few short days after issuing the challenge.

Paul took to social media to share his condolences.

Sports fans all over the world will be grateful to have watched Bamba ply his trade over the years. Any boxer who is breaking Mike Tyson's records certainly gave the fans their money's worth.

Rest in peace, champ.
