Biden issues a flurry of last-second pardons
Former President Joe Biden, just before leaving the White House, issued a flurry of controversial pardons.
The pardons are so controversial, in fact, that Congress, as we will see, is planning on investigating them.
Breitbart News reports that the last-second pardons include "preemptive" pardons for the likes of former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Retired Gen. Mark Milley, Anthony Fauci, and members of the January 6 Committee.
Biden, according to Fox News, also pardoned political activist and Black nationalist Marcus Garvey, among others.
It finally happened
The big question in recent weeks was whether or not Biden would use the presidential pardon power to preemptively pardon individuals whom the political left claims the incoming Trump administration is going to target.
During those weeks, Biden and the White House, on numerous occasions, said that he was considering it. This was despite the fact that some Democrats - including some pro-Biden Democrats - expressed hope that Biden would not vitiate the pardon power by doing so.
As we know, though, such ideas as ruining the Constitution do not matter much to Biden and the Democrats, so it is not that surprising that he decided, in his final hours, to move forward with the preemptive pardons.
Biden, in a statement, said:
The issuance of these pardons should not be mistaken as an acknowledgment that any individual engaged in any wrongdoing, nor should acceptance be misconstrued as an admission of guilt for any offense. Our nation owes these public servants a debt of gratitude for their tireless commitment to our country.
If they did nothing wrong, then obviously pardons would not be needed. So, suffice it to saying, that many are not buying Biden's logic here.
There's more:
Fox reports:
In addition to Garvey, the clemency recipients are Darryl Chambers, Ravidath "Ravi" Ragbir, Don Leonard Scott, Jr., and Kemba Smith Pradia. Garvey was granted the pardon posthumously.
And, this is in addition to thousands of other pardons that Biden handed out just in recent days.
Let us also not forget Biden's pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, which has been condemned even by some Democrats.
President Donald Trump has called Biden's use of the pardon power disgraceful, and, now, the Republican-controlled Congress is looking to investigate the situation. U.S. Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) reacted to the pardons, saying:
Implication is that they needed the pardons. So, let’s call them all before Congress and demand the truth. If they refuse or lie – let’s test the constitutional ‘reach’ of these pardons with regard to their future actions.
Now that these individuals are pardoned, they can no longer "plead the Fifth."
