Joe Biden finally got a win on the world stage that he can hang his hat on.
During the recent NATO conference, Turkey agreed to lift its blockage of Sweden entering NATO.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan flipped on his stance not long after threatening that he would not change his mind on this until Turkey was given membership into the EU, reported AXIOS.
Big Win for Biden
Biden spent considerable time with the Turkish leader, even promising to work with him for the “next five years,” implying that he was a shoo-in for the 2024 election.
Biden has had little to celebrate in terms of foreign policy, so you better believe he will touting this as him personally strengthening NATO.
This move will also hurt Putin, who now has to deal with expanded NATO territories while still trying to defeat Ukraine in this nonsensical war.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, who is a staunch ally of Joe Biden’s, stated, “This is not new negotiation, but it is about implementing, and reassuring the implementation of the different things we agreed a year ago in Madrid, reported CNN.
US national security adviser Jake Sullivan added, “We’re coming into this consequential summit with a full head of steam.
“Every few months, the question is called: Can the West hang together? Can NATO hang together?
“Every time allies gather, that question gets re-upped, and every time the allies come together and answer it forcefully and vehemently: Yes we can.”
Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) took no time at all to applaud the decision and put the full credit to Biden, stating, “He has a real grasp of it, a real handle on it, and is very effective. And this is a victory for America, for the West, for freedom, and for President Biden.”
In reality, this was less about Biden and more about Erdogan overplaying his hand with the blockage of Sweden over his entry into the EU. Turkey was starting to feel the squeeze, with some notable deals on hold until Sweden was approved.
Now those holds will be removed, Turkey will get its military equipment, and it will also likely get its approval into the EU from this.
