Biden Confirms He Will Attend Inauguration
The peaceful transfer of power… but just how peaceful will it be?
Trump refused to attend Joe Biden’s inauguration, the first time that I can remember a sitting president not attending for a transition in modern history.
Many expected Biden to do the same to Trump, but Biden has confirmed he will be attending the event.
Of Course
There were two reasons that Donald Trump did not attend Biden’s inauguration.
First, he did not think that he lost the election. Second, nobody wanted him there, so he figured he would just take the helicopter home and call it a day.
Things are a bit different this time around, as Biden will be in attendance, albeit without the presence of a significant member of congressional Democrats who have already confirmed they will be skipping the inauguration.
When Biden was asked about attending, he stated, "Of course I am. The only president ever to avoid an inauguration is the guy that's about to be inaugurated."
Trump was the first sitting president in 150 years not to attend his successor's inauguration.
John Adams skipped the 1801 inauguration, leaving the White House in the early morning hours.
John Quincy Adams did not attend the 1829 inauguration after a very tense election, leaving Washington the day before the transfer of power.
The final occurrence before Trump was in 1869 when Andrew Johnson did not attend the inauguration of Ulysses S. Grant.
Joe Biden and Donald Trump have already met once after the election, and so far, the changeover has lacked the dramatics of the Trump-to-Biden transition.
Biden did take a shot at Trump during a recent interview, stating, "The fact that he doesn't abide by the rules of the democracy we've established is not my concern. My job is to make a transition workable and available."
"The bottom line is that we can't keep this up. We can't keep up this childish game of walking away when you don't agree and not cooperating."
I am guessing that was in response to Trump circumventing some of the usual transition protocols that have been in place to try to make the transition between administrations as smooth as possible.
