Arguments Canceled in Trump Appeal to Have Fani Willis Disqualified
It looks like Donald Trump may have just come one step closer to avoiding another legal problem.
Arguments were supposed to be held in just a few weeks in Trump’s appeal to have Fulton County DA Fani Willis removed from the case.
The court canceled the arguments, and now rumors are starting to fly.
Canceled
The court announcement was brief and to point, saying that December 5 arguments were canceled “until further order of this court.’
Now, Donald Trump cannot be tried in federal court as a sitting president.
State courts, while expected to follow suit, are not bound by the same rules.
The Trump RICO case in Georgia cannot move forward until after this appeal is completed, so the thinking now is that the charges will be dropped or the case indefinitely delayed while Trump serves out his term as president.
This case, however, involved numerous co-defendants, so the question then becomes what happens to their case.
In this instance, the appeal for Willis’ eligibility involved eight other defendants.
Special Counsel Jack Smith has canceled deadlines in his cases, with the speculation being that he would wind down the case before Trump takes office.
This presents a very interesting scenario because Trump has been adamant that Smith will be fired on day one, but Trump does not have that authority.
Trump’s AG could fire Smith, but that would likely lead to charges of abuse of power and the impeachment of both Trump and his AG as soon as Democrats regain power.
Sentencing in the hush-money case that was brought by Alvin Bragg was just indefinitely delayed, but Bragg has stated that he is not yet willing to drop the case outright.
However, there have been rumors that Judge Merchan is considering vacating the verdict after Trump was elected, but again, that is just a rumor as Merchan has yet to speak publicly on the matter.
