AOC brags about demanding Clarence Thomas' resignation in year-end video message
In a boastful end-of-the-year social media post on Friday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) touted her willingness in 2023 to target conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas by calling for his resignation, as the Washington Examiner reports.
AOC's bizarre flex came in a video in which the congresswoman giddily recounted what she considered to be 23 key “wins” of the past year.
Ocasio-Cortez blasts Thomas
In her message to followers, the Democrat firebrand from New York highlighted what she claimed was her role in pushing for Thomas to resign from the high court over a series of potential ethical and financial issues that emerged in recent months.
According to AOC, she spearheaded efforts to force the Justice Department to probe Thomas' conduct, while also advocating for his impeachment.
“We called on the Department of Justice to investigate Clarence Thomas for corruption and were joined by senior members of the House Judiciary and Oversight committees,” Ocasio-Cortez explained.
Yearlong crusade against SCOTUS justice
Indeed, as Reuters noted back in April, AOC, in response to a ProPublica report slamming Thomas for accepting luxury travel and lodgings from a wealthy Republican donor, made loud calls for the justice's immediate impeachment.
“It is the House's responsibility to pursue that investigation in the form of impeachment,” the lawmaker said at the time.
Thomas, for his part, defended his actions, saying that he had sought guidance on the proper reporting requirements pertaining to trips taken with family friend Harlan Crow and noting that he was told that he had no obligation to disclose “personal hospitality” of the sort received.
In August, Ocasio-Cortez also contacted the Justice Department and demanded that Thomas be investigated for that same relationship with Crow as well as his connections with other individuals she said conferred financial benefits on the jurist, as the New York Post explained at the time.
Hypocritical take?
Despite the obvious pride AOC appeared to have about her efforts targeting Thomas, some observers would almost certainly point out a certain degree of hypocrisy in her comments, given her own brushes with questionable ethics.
Specifically, earlier this year, the House Ethics Committee found that there was “substantial reason to believe” that the congresswoman accepted impermissible gifts and services in connection with her 2021 appearance at the Met Gala.
Those facts arguably go a long way toward rendering the liberal lawmaker's ongoing beef with Thomas rather disingenuous, to say the very least.
