Currently, the role of Ambassador to Italy has no occupant.
According to a report this weekend on Fox Business, that is because House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) wants that role if the Dems lose the House.
Pelosi has denied this is the case.

Pelosi’s office responded, “The Speaker has no interest in this position and has not discussed it with anyone in the White House.
“This is the second time Maria Bartiromo has proceeded with reporting anonymous rumors about the Speaker’s future that have no merit.
“And the second time she has failed to ask us for comment before airing or publishing this utter nonsense.”
Let’s just keep the denial on the back burner and see what happens.
This is not the first time that rumors have been circulating regarding Pelosi and a possible ambassadorship.
There were rumors during the last cycle as well, but Dems held the House, so it never came to fruition.
If Dems lose the House this time around, even if Pelosi wins her election, there have been numerous reports that she will step down and retire from Congress.
