Alvin Bragg scrutinized for defending release of migrants who assaulted NYC cops

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has regularly courted criticism for his soft-on-crime approach, but his recent decision to release – without bail – illegal immigrants accused of assaulting police officers in his jurisdiction could be a fatal blow to his reputation, as the Post Millennial explains.

Despite the widespread outrage that has followed in the wake of the men's release, Bragg has doubled down on his choice and attempted to defend what many believe to be the indefensible.

Attack sparks outrage

As CBS News reported, it was late last month that a crowd of illegal immigrants set upon two NYPD officers in Times Square.

The incident took place in front of a migrant shelter on West 42nd Street when officers attempted to disperse a disorderly crowd that had gathered.

NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said of the scenario, “You have eight people attacking a lieutenant and a cop, running up to them, trying to kick them in the face.”

Bragg explains

However, despite the existence of video evidence chronicling the shameful events of that day, Bragg chose to release the suspects without bail, much to the frustration not just of the victims' fellow officers, but to untold numbers of New Yorkers.

According to Bragg, the video evidence was insufficient justification to do anything other than what he did, because, in his estimation, authorities were unable to “conclusively identify each defendant.”

“In a court of law, our profound obligation is to make sure we have right people charged with the right crimes. I don't think New Yorkers want to charge the wrong person,” Bragg said.

The embattled district attorney went on, saying, “There is a presumption of pre-trial non-incarceration for every case except those with charges of homicide or the death of a victim.”

Backlash grows

Amid reports that at least some of those involved in the attack on police have since boarded buses for the West Coast following their release, the backlash against Bragg has only intensified.

Even far-left actor and comedian Michael Rapaport – long a harsh critic of former President Donald Trump – has suggested that the worsening situation surrounding illegal immigration in this country as evidenced by the incident in New York City could force him to abandon Joe Biden and vote for his rival come November, as Fox News reports.

Blasting the current president for prioritizing foreign concerns over domestic ones, Rapaport declared, “This is why when I say voting for pig d*** Donald Trump is on the table, voting for pig d*** Donald Trump is on the table!” but whether folks like him will put their money where their mouths are at the ballot box with regard to Biden or Bragg, only time will tell.
