Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) seems to be a bit perturbed with her president.
Democrats were all counting on the DC crime bill so they could release more criminals onto our streets and emptying out the prisons.
There is no way they figured Joe Biden would sign Republican legislation that managed to get through the Senate to defeat the new crime bill.
When it became apparent the legislation was going to pass the Senate after having already passed the House, Biden let it be known that he would not veto the legislation once it hit his desk.
Didn’t See That Coming
With Senators Feinstein (D-CA) and Fetterman (D-PA) out sick and missing votes, Democrats had no votes to spare. So, when two Democrats hinted they would be supporting the legislation, the new crime bill was yanked by local DC officials.
Pelosi was a bit salty that Biden did not warn them after she had drummed up Democrats about the vote in the House, reports The Hill.
Pelosi stated, "If he was going to do it, I wish he would’ve told us first, because this was a hard vote for the House members. And it’s a hard vote for the Senate members. And the mayor of District of Columbia even differed from the legislators who passed it, so it wasn’t that clear.
"I’m a big supporter of statehood for the District of Columbia. I voted with the District of Columbia. I understand why some people voted against. But if the president’s going to do it, hey, could you give us a heads up too in the House,” reports Fox News.
The new bill would have dialed back sentences for some rather serious crimes, as well as eliminating mandatory minimum sentences for misdemeanors. To give you an idea of how radical the legislation was, Democrat Mayor Muriel Bowser vetoed the legislation, but her veto was overridden by the city council.
When it became clear that the Republican legislation was going to make it through the Senate, Biden stated, "I support D.C. Statehood and home-rule – but I don’t support some of the changes D.C. Council put forward over the Mayor’s objections – such as lowering penalties for carjackings. If the Senate votes to overturn what D.C. Council did – I’ll sign it."
Over and above Pelosi, there was outrage partywide, including our friend AOC, who stated, "This ain't it. D.C. has a right to govern itself like any other state or municipality. If the President supports D.C. statehood, he should govern like it."
It is truly shocking to me how far Democrats are willing to go to reward criminals, yet they will not help our veterans, take serious steps regarding homelessness, or anything else, really, related to law-abiding citizens in this country.
