Actor Charles Dierkop Dead at 87
Charles Dierkop has his name in the credits of some of the most iconic movies of our time.
He was not the A-lister, but he played key parts in many of the movies and shows he starred in, including “The Sting” and “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.”
Sadly, he passed away on Sunday at the age of 87.
He’s Gone
According to reports, Dierkop passed away from complications after a recent heart attack and a case of pneumonia.
Even though his first two roles were uncredited roles, his agent did him well by getting him parts in “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea” and “The Hustler.”
He had also landed a recurring role on the TV series, “Naked City,” appearing in nine episodes from 1960-63.
It was mostly single episodes of TV shows after that, but then he landed the role of Salvanti in “The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.”
Somewhere along the way, he got the attention of the right people, landing the role of Flat Nose Curry in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” in 1969.
During a 2018 interview, he explained how that role came to be.
Dierkop explained, “My agent was on a plane reading a script and it says, ‘Flat Nose Curry’ … I think I have someone in mind.
“So I got an interview with [director] George Roy Hill and got cast, quite simply.”
He partnered up with Robert Redford and Paul Newman again in “The Sting” in 1973, playing Floyd, a bodyguard for one of the other characters in the movie.
In 1974, he hit paydirt landing the recurring role of Det. Pete Royster in “Police Woman,” appearing in 90 episodes of the show.
Toward the latter part of his career, Dierkop concentrated more on movies, with all but one of his credits being a movie since 2000.
Being mostly a supporting actor for his career, his only hardware was for winning “Best Ensemble Cast” at the Golden Reel International Film Festival for “Chinaman’s Chance: America’s Other Slaves.”
Rest in peace, sir, and thanks for all the memories.
