Accident kills NHL superstar Johnny Gaudreau and brother

A statement from the Columbus Blue Jackets organization confirmed the passing of their beloved forward Johnny Gaudreau, and his brother Matthew.

Gaudreau was only thirty-one at the time of his passing, and The Columbus Dispatch offered unconfirmed rumors suggesting that the hockey player and his brother died on Thursday night while bicycling in Oldmans Township, New Jersey, according to The Daily Caller.

“The Columbus Blue Jackets are shocked and devastated by this unimaginable tragedy," the team wrote in their statement issued to X on Friday.

"Johnny was not only a great hockey player, but more significantly a loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend."

According to police, Gaudreau and his brother were struck by a possible drunk driver and both were declared dead at the scene, as reported by TMZ.

According to the outlet, Sean Higgins is currently in police custody following his arrest on two counts of vehicular death.

Gaudreau and his brother were set to serve as groomsmen at their sister's wedding when the unfortunate event happened mere hours beforehand.

According to TMZ, Katie Gaudreau and Devin Joyce have decided to call off their wedding that was scheduled on August 30.

The Blue Jackets' starting forward Gaudreau joined the club in July 2022.

“Johnny played the game with great joy, which was felt by everyone who saw him on the ice. He brought a genuine love for hockey with him everywhere he played, from Boston College to the Calgary Flames to Team USA to the Blue Jackets.”
