REPORT: Mexico preparing to seal illegal border tunnel
If you have been paying attention to the news, you know that Trump is in a tariff war with both Mexico and Canada.
For Mexico, the main issue to get the tariffs removed is to help shut down the flow of illegal immigrants over the border.
Mexico appears to be taking the tariffs very seriously. Recently, it announced that authorities are getting ready to seal an illegal tunnel near the Rio Grande.
Seal It Up
These tunnels are used by Cartel and human traffickers to sneak illegal immigrants, drugs, and guns over the border.
From reports I have seen over the years, there are dozens of these tunnels, but the primary concerns are the immigration hot spots, including El Paso and Juarez areas.
This week, the Mexican Section of the International Boundary and Water Commission (CILA, in Spanish) was seen using special sonar equipment near the Rio Grande to spot these tunnels.
They were reportedly marking spots where crews were expected to show up to start pouring concrete to seal the tunnels that had been found so far.
According to the Border Patrol, the United States has already sealed the tunnel on the United States side of the border.
According to CILA officials, the entrance is just feet away from a local highway in Juarez, and the tunnel goes under the Rio Grande.
The challenge, of course, is in properly prepping the work so that the levee is not damaged when they fill in the tunnel.
No arrests have been made regarding the construction or use of the tunnel, but Mexican authorities have stated that the matter is still under investigation.
I would not expect much movement on that, however, as that tunnel has likely been in service for some time and was probably being used by various human traffickers and the cartel.
On the flip side, this is clearly progress, as these tunnels are used nearly every day to bring illegals over the border.
It does show that Mexico is taking this seriously, and, hopefully, we will see enough progress for the tariff war to be ended between Mexico and the United States.
I have stated before that Trump loves to use these tariffs as leverage, but now Canada and Mexico have pushed back with tariffs of their own.
From my perspective, Mexico seems more interested in ending this little war, while Canada seems more intent on pushing back against Trump.
