GOP House members will file criminal referrals against sanctuary city mayors
This week, Congress called several sanctuary city mayors to testify before a committee.
The four Democrat mayors were Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston.
During the hearing, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) informed them that she would be filing criminal referrals with Attorney General Pam Bondi for harboring illegal immigrants.
Criminals
My regular readers know that illegal immigration is a major point of contention for me.
I have long awaited the GOP’s challenge to sanctuary city laws, which finally happened when Bondi took office.
Trump took a shot at this during his first term, but it was too late and the case never made it to the Supreme Court. That will not be the case this around, as Bondi has already filed suit, giving them more than enough time to get this to the Supreme Court before the end of Trump’s term.
After questioning the four mayors, Luna stated, “To me after this line of questioning, it’s very clear that these policies that you have all implicated are active and alive and well in your cities are in direct violation with Title 8, U.S.C. § 1324 and is a federal offense.
“You all speak about a broken immigration system and yet here you guys are aiding and abetting in that entire process.
“I do not think you guys are bad people but I think you are ideologically misled which is why, unfortunately based on your responses, I’m going to be criminally referring you to the Department of Justice for investigation, and as soon as I leave here, these will be going over to [Attorney General] Pam Bondi.”
I have never understood how sanctuary city laws could even be considered legal when the court has repeatedly determined that immigration is a federal issue.
If that is the case, then how can a city declare it will not cooperate with federal authorities and turn over illegal immigrants who are apprehended by local police for another crime?
But let’s be clear… if you enter this country illegally, you have broken the law, so you are a criminal the second you cross that border illegally.
I am of the firm belief that sanctuary city laws need to be wiped off the books, and every person who entered this country illegally needs to be rounded up and sent back across the border, permanently banned from ever entering the country again.
And if you break that ban, let’s have a detention center built to house them all and keep them all in prison for a specified period to deter others from crossing the border illegally.
I know there are people that want a more friendly approach, but you cannot reward people who crossed the border illegally in any way, shape, or form, as that is simply not fair to those people who did it the right way, and spent tens of thousands of dollars on legal fees to make it happen.
