Zelensky says he would resign for peace
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been taking serious fire from Donald Trump.
Trump has started to pitch the narrative that it was Ukraine that started this war, not Russia.
Now, Zelensky is offering his head on a platter, stating that he would resign if it meant peace for his country.
Let's Trade
Trump has been hitting Zelensky hard after the Ukrainian president complained that peace negotiations are taking place without him.
He has stated that he would never sign a deal if he is not involved.
Trump hit him hard, suggesting that Ukraine started the war, with the administration now beginning to push the narrative that Zelensky pushing membership to NATO is what drove Putin to invade.
Trump has since offered Zelensky a mineral rights deal that would require them to pay back the military aid and then some. The deal calls for a $500 billion payoff via revenues from Ukraine's natural resources.
On the deal, Zelensky stated, “I am not signing something that 10 generations of Ukrainians will have to repay."
The media has likened the deal to a mafia shakedown, and there are even some Republicans who think Trump is taking this way too far, shaking down what is supposed to be an ally, but Zelensky rubbed Trump the wrong way, and now he is paying the price.
I am sure there is plenty of room for negotiation here, but Zelensky is not helping his case by saying he owes the United States nothing for the aid he has already received.
Now, Zelensky is offering to step down if it brings this war to a conclusion.
He stated, “If it is peace for Ukraine, and if you really want me to leave my post, I’m ready.
“Alternatively, I can trade this for NATO membership, if such conditions exist, immediately, so we don’t have lengthy discussions. I’m focusing on Ukraine’s security today, not in 20 years. And I don’t intend to stay in power for decades.”
Zelensky also addressed Trump's criticism, calling Zelensky a dictator for declaring martial law and canceling elections during the war.
He stated, “I am the elected president by 73% of Ukrainian people. After the martial law, there will be elections. Perhaps he will say something good about me. It is more important what Ukrainians think about me."
This is getting ugly, and it is a situation that Trump needs to get a handle on soon or it will blow up in his face.
He already has Republicans pushing back on his claim that Ukraine started the war, and they are quite uneasy over the excessive repayment plan Trump wants to lock down mineral rights in Ukraine.
Trump has the luxury of knowing he is not running for another term, but he has to think big picture here and realize he could cripple the GOP in future elections if he handles this wrong.
I don't want to give the impression that Trump should give Zelensky whatever he wants, as my readers know I have been demanding accountability from Zelensky since the outset, but Trump cannot come off as mob boss shaking someone down either.
Let's get everyone to the table, work at a peace deal, and secure mineral rights for Ukraine to pay back every penny it was given to fight this war. And if we can get Zelensky to resign in the process, even better.
