Flight diverted after bomb threat
A flight has been diverted after it received threats that there was a bomb on board.
In fact, the New York Post reports that fighter jets escorted America Airlines Flight 282 to safety.
"An American Airlines flight from JFK Airport to India was forced to divert to Rome — and dramatically landed Sunday under fighter escort — after a bomb threat on board," the outlet reports.
It adds, "The 199 passengers and 15 crew members on American Airlines Flight 292 endured nearly 15 hours stuck on the plane as a result of the scare."
Here's what happened:
The incident took place on Sunday afternoon.
The Post reports:
The flight was just two hours from its destination when it made an abrupt U-turn over the Central Asian country of Turkmenistan due to a “possible security issue,” the airline confirmed. Passengers said the first sign they had that something was wrong was when the captain announced a “diversion due to a security issue,” before the aircraft made a sharp 180-degree turn away from the Indian capital, New Delhi, and back toward Europe.
It no doubt was a scary situation for those on board. Outlets have managed to speak with some of the passengers, who admitted that it is was an anxiety-provoking situation. They ended up being in the plane for a total of nearly 15 hours.
According to the Post, it was indeed a bomb threat that caused the diversion.
The outlet writes:
The plane diverted due to a possible bomb on board, the Italian air force confirmed.
All clear
According to the Associated Press, the plane did end up making it to safety, and it was determined that no bomb was on board.
Per the outlet:
An American Airlines flight from New York to New Delhi landed safely in Rome on Sunday afternoon after it was diverted due to a security concern, which later proved to be “non-credible,” the airline said.
The Associated Press reports that, once the plane landed, it was inspected by law enforcement.
The outlet writes:
An Associated Press reporter filmed two fighter jets flying over the airport shortly before the unscheduled landing. Fire trucks were visible on the landing strip on one side of the plane after it landed.
The inspection, however, did not raise any red flags, so the plane was subsequently "cleared to re-depart." It is unclear when it did so. The plane did stay in Rome for the night to "allow for the required crew rest."
